Malcolm X once made a memorable quote during his famous speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet" on March 29, 1964 that still resonates to this day. It simply states, "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock; Plymouth Rock landed on us". In this statement, Malcolm X was highlighting that African Americans did not come to the Americas as voluntary settlers or Pilgrims. Instead, their ancestors were brought to the country against their will through the transatlantic slave trade. The metaphor signifies that the foundation of American history and its associated systems of oppression were forcibly imposed upon Black Americans.
Speaking of rocks, another famous rock related idiom that often contradicts the user is when people ask "what rock have you been living under?" This living under a rock saying is crazy to me because some people will ask when you are not aware of the latest happenings in "pop culture", but when it comes to things that truly matter in the chasm between life and death of those sharing this earth with us (e.g. the need to Free Congo, Palestine, Sudan, Tigray, among all Oppressed People and Places on Earth), they have no idea. So how can a "pop culture" follower have the audacity to ask "what rock have you been living under?" There is a stark contrast in subject matter because one is a story fabricated by man in this world and the other is an existential truth of the universe, God’s creation. If I didn’t know any better I would think these "pop culture" followers have been hit upside the head with boulders meaning they are actually the ones living under a rock. The individual, question, and subject matter itself make you wonder what is indeed "pop culture" and why.
It's ironic because the very the same group of oppressed individuals that Mr. X was speaking on behalf of, who likely believe that they have made it in this world while embracing Plymouth rock just may ask "what rock have you been living under?" if someone is not aware of their latest activities in "pop culture". However they never speak on universal truths, choosing to instead focus on what is less than. Individuals like Jay Z, Lebron James, and other "pop culture icons" who just so happen to promote a "roc". You cannot make this stuff up.
